Order Online : "The State of Ohio"
This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

Secretary of State launches push to persuade high school graduates to vote and become poll workers.
By Karen Kasler - May 22, 2007
Fifteen thousand Ohio high school seniors will get something along with their diplomas when they graduate in the next few weeks. 250 high schools in Knox, Lucas, Montgomery, Scioto and Trumbull counties have been asked to provide voter registration forms to graduates. Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner says young adults need to vote, because they may have a bigger stake in what happens in elections than older voters do.

Brunner says she's learned from teen recruitment projects in Cuyahoga and Franklin Counties that there are benefits to having young adults working the polls.

And Brunner says students have widely varied schedules and priorities, but this gives all high school graduates the opportunity to register to vote.

Brunner says the pilot project will cost less than $1500, and she's hoping to expand it to the rest of the state soon. The voter registration form includes a letter from Brunner, directing teens to a website where they can apply for an absentee ballot or become a poll worker.
