Ohio's Secretary of State has been given the authority to begin a comprehensive study of the voting machines used in Ohio without having to bid contracts for the work. Earlier this month, a state panel refused to give Jennifer Brunner the clearance she needed to start the $1.8 million study. In an interview with Ohio Public Radio's Jo Ingles, Brunner explains members of the panel gave her the go-ahead got after they got answers to questions they had about the process.
Brunner decided to conduct the comprehensive study in light of questions raised in recent months about the security of electronic voting machines. Studies in other states on voting machines similar to Ohio's have shown problems with the integrity of the equipment. Elections officials in California were so concerned about the problems that they decertified the machines in that state. |
