This week on "The State of Ohio": The budget is on its way to a committee that will hammer out the differences before the end of the month deadline. But there are serious issues on both sides that could slow down the talks. A billion dollars is headed back to Ohio employers who paid into the state’s Bureau of Workers' Comp program. But a critic says the BWC has an outstanding bill that remains unpaid. And more on how Ohio's poorest people are surviving the rising costs of a basic existence.

After four decades in public office, George Voinovich says he won't run for re-election.
By Karen Kasler - January 12, 2009
Ohio's senior senator says his current term in Washington will be his last. 72-year-old Republican Sen. George Voinovich says he doesn't want campaigning and fundraising for the 2010 election to distract him from the challenges facing the state and the country.

Voinovich, who's in his second term, also says he wants to spend more time with his family. Voinovich has been in public office for more than 40 years, serving as a mayor, a state representative, governor and US Senator, and says he's been elected to more offices than any person in Ohio history. Voinovich is the fourth Republican Senator to announce his retirement since the fall election that swept Democrats into office across the country.
