Order Online : "The State of Ohio"
This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

Numbers of Appalachian kids going to college improving, but advocates want more.
By Fred Kight - June 10, 2009
In 1992, only about one in three high school seniors in Appalachia Ohio were going to college. That number is now up to about one in two. The figures come from a newly released study by Ohio University. Researcher Marsha Lewis gives most much of the higher attendance credit to the Ohio Appalachian Center for Higher Education.

The study also shows that Appalachian Ohio students are increasingly seeking degrees in growth sectors including medical and health fields and technology.

On the bad news side of things, the study reports "since Appalachia Ohio has a population with lower educational attaintment than Ohio as a whole, increased progress is needed for this region to achieve parity."
