Order Online : "The State of Ohio"
This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

OU tries to reach out to many of its students - the first in their families to go to college.
By Fred Kight - September 8, 2009
When Ohio University Proffessor Julie Suhr went to college, she didn't know what to expect. She was the first of her family to attend and didn't have anyone to call on for advice. Now, Suhr wants to be that go-to person for OU students coming into college from a similar perspective.

Greg Lester (:22)
Ohio University recently launched a first generation faculty and staff Web site which showcases stories like Suhr's, stories of those who were the first in their families to graduate from a four year institution. The Web site was developed by Greg Lester, an official with O-U's College Adjustment Program. Lester sent out a survey hoping to find mentors for the students and nearly 300 faculty and staff indicated they would be willing to get involved. He says the Web site is particularly relevant at OU, in Appalachia Ohio, where there are many first-generation graduates.
