Order Online : "The State of Ohio"
This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

Opponents of collective bargaining law say they'll have enough signatures to get to fall ballot.
By Bill Cohen - June 6, 2011
Leaders of that drive to let Ohio voters kill the state’s new collective bargaining law say their petition drive is on track to give voters the final say in November. Unions and their allies say they’re confident they’ll turn in at least 450,000 signatures by the end of the month. That would be enough to put the law onto the ballot, even if 40% of the names are tossed out as invalid. Jerry Cupp is a Columbus policeman, active in the Fraternal Order of Police. He says Ohioans have been eager to sign the petitions.

A spokesman for the referendum drive says his group’s biggest challenge is to process all the petitions that are being turned in. This coming Saturday, activists who think the new collective bargaining law takes away too much power from unions will stage a rally in Columbus, featuring motorcycle riders.
