Order Online : "The State of Ohio"
This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

Democrats propose bill to reduce role of lobbyists in writing legislation.
By Bill Cohen - July 13, 2011
Minority Democrats in the Ohio House of Representatives say they’re upset that lobbyists for special interest groups have helped write legislative bills in secret. The Democrats are pushing a proposal that would require a lawmaker always be involved when a lobbyist works with legislative staffers to craft a bill. Rep. Ted Celeste says recently, a lobbyist for charter school interests helped write a bill softening regulation on the schools…but it was impossible to link any particular legislator with the move.

Another proposal Democrats are pushing would declare that all records from a public-private partnership are public records. That plan is aimed at shedding more light on new Republican-backed ventures that involve privatizing some state government programs.

Rep. Ted Celeste (D-Columbus) (:15)
