Watch This Week's "The State of Ohio" Online
Order Online : "The State of Ohio"
This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

Lawmaker proposes to add ancient artifact to list of "official state" items.
By Bill Cohen - April 13, 2012
Does Ohio need to declare an official state artifact? Perhaps “need” is too strong a word, Rep. John Carney admits, but he still thinks it’s a good idea. That’s why he’s proposing that a pipe, used by a Native American tribe that has since disappeared from Ohio, be given the honor. Statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen asked Carney to describe the pipe.

Carney says this campaign by elementary school students is helping teach them about the politics that’s sometimes involved in law-making. Carney is a Democrat in a Republican-controlled legislature. That’s why he recommended to the students that they find a Republican to co-sponsor the bill. Another Columbus-area state representative, Mike Duffey, has agreed to take on the project.
