This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. Longest-serving woman on the Ohio Supreme Court says she's leaving at the end of this year.
By Karen Kasler - May 22, 2012
The longest serving woman justice on the Ohio Supreme Court is stepping down at the end of the year. Justice Evelyn Lundberg Stratton says she wants more time and more freedom to speak out on causes that concern her, such as mental health issues in the courts and changes in the juvenile justice system. Stratton says she’d been thinking about retiring for a while, but is doing it now to give her successor a chance to run successfully in two years.

Stratton’s term doesn’t end until the beginning of 2015, and she says she hasn’t recommended anyone to Gov. John Kasich to replace her. She’s one of six Republicans on the seven-member court. Stratton says there was no sudden reason for her departure, but says she made the announcement now because rumors were circulating that she was leaving.
