When you fill out your federal income tax return, you might notice a special box. If you check it, youll be steering $3 of your payment to the Presidential Election Fund. The fund can be tapped by major candidates for president to help pay for their campaigns. The Ohio League of Women Voters is encouraging people to make the special designation. The group stresses it doesn't cost you any more, it simply channels a tiny bit of your payment to the special fund. Peg Rosenfield is the top elections specialist for the Ohio League. Statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen asked her why the group thinks the presidential campaign fund is such a good idea. Rosenfield says when candidates accept money from the taxpayer fund, they agree that their own campaigns wont take contributions from special interests. Still, activists for various causes and interests have found a way around that system. They have influenced elections by paying for TV commercials that portray some candidates as good and other candidates as bad. |
