This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

| Nuclear Waste Shipment Wrap. |

A reactor vessel from a closed plant is Michigan may be on its way through Ohio today. Ideastream's Karen Schaefer has more: Six years after the Big Rock Point nuclear plant in Michigan shut down for good, the reactor vessel is being removed to North Carolina for permanent storage. It will be shipped by rail and pass through Toledo. After that, it could be routed through Dayton, Columbus or greater Cleveland. Nuclear watchdogs say the vessel - classified as low-level waste - is still highly radioactive. Kevin Kamps is with the Nuclear Resource Information Service in Washington. But the Nuclear Energy Institute says the public should not be worried about the closely-guarded shipment. The agency points to a record of more than 3-thousand shipments of high-level waste with no accidents resulting in a release of radiation. NEI alleges more hazardous waste materials are transported through the state on a daily basis far less safely. Karen Schaefer, 90.3. |
