This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

Ohio State University's head football coach is out of a job. And this is happening just a day after John Cooper's team suffered a blistering 24-7 loss to the University of South Carolina at the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Florida. The loss is accentuated by the fact that three of the Gamecocks' four touchdowns were scored by a Troy, Ohio native, Ryan Brewer. Brewer, named Mr. Football in Ohio in 1998, was not even recruited by Ohio State. Avid OSU fans are critical of Cooper for his 2-10-1 record against the University of Michigan. And while Cooper has led the Buckeyes to 11 bowl games during his tenure at OSU, his team has won only 3 times. The University's decision to part ways with Cooper is drawing cheers from some diehard Buckeye fans.
Some fans and sports commentators are criticizing Cooper for his handling of discipline problems with team members. Some of those problems include one star player being deemed academically ineligible to play in the bowl game because he did not attend class, one team member filing a civil suit against another over an alleged assault incident, and various complaints of poor conduct by athletes on and off the field. |
