This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. OSU Riot Encourages Discussion On How To Quell Future Riots.
April 23, 2002
Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman and safety director Mitch Brown plan to meet Wednesday with Ohio State University officials, students and campus area landlords to discuss ways to quell riots like the ones that took place Saturday.

26 people, including 16 OSU students were arrested for the melee on Chittenden Avenue between Indianola and High Street, the same area where rioting occurred last year. This time, cars were damaged, firecrackers were set off, and at least six Columbus police officers suffered minor injuries.

Last year, the city beefed up police residence in the area, and worked with OSU to distribute information on the penalties for unruly behavior. Coleman's spokesperson, Mike Brown, tells WCBE's Jim Letizia that this year, officials may go even further.
