A proposal to triple Ohio's cigarette tax is picking up support. Republicans who dominate the state senate are pushing it. Governor Bob Taft is endorsing it. And some minority Democrats in the legislature also say they'll vote yes on it. Joyce Beatty is a Democratic state representative from Columbus. The proposal to add a 50-cent-per-pack tax would raise an estimated $400 million a year, and Beatty says that would help fill a hole in the state budget. She talked with Statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen. Beatty is the number three leader of Democrats in the Ohio House. |
