The life of a Columbus activist hits the big screen this evening (Tuesday), with the premiere of the movie titled 'Conviction'. It's based on the autobiography of Carl Upchurch, a community activist who negotiated a nationwide gang truce in the 1990s. The film traces his life from an early involvement with gangs and the revolving door of prison to his work helping others break free of destructive cycles. Upchurch says he wrote the book in the simplest terms possible, so that it would be accessible. Upchurch tells Alison Holm of member station WCBE he helped write the screenplay for the Showtime cable network, and hung around on the set during filming to make sure the story stayed true to the message he wanted to send. Upchurch spoke with Alison Holm of member station WCBE. |
