Ohio has put together a policy panel on underage and childhood drinking that will study the problem and develop recommendations for state, county and local governments on ways to deal with the situation. First Lady Hope Taft will help chair the panel. And substance abuse specialist and community leaders throughout Ohio will serve on it. Judge Stephen Michael of the Jackson County Juvenile court says it’s important to make sure the recommendations developed by this panel work for all of the state’s diverse communities. The panel is a response to a national report issued by the Institute of Medicine which shows more kids drink alcohol that smoke tobacco or marijuana. It’s estimated the conservative cost of underage drinking to the nation is 53 million dollars a year. |
