The Ohio Highway Patrol says controversial new technology that scans license plates helped troopers recover more stolen cars on the Ohio Turnpike than the same time period in 2003. Lt. Rick Zwayer told Ohio Public Radio’s Karen Kasler says a four-month test of the Automatic Plate Recognition system is now complete. Zwayer says the state will have to evaluate the system to decide if it should be put into place permanently, but if it is, he says troopers don’t intend to use to it track speeding or other minor crimes. 64-thousand dollars of homeland security funds were used to buy scanners for the western and eastern entrances to the Turnpike, as well as a mobile scanner. |
