This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

Ohio is trying to convince the federal government to locate a mammoth new facility here that would be the world’s first non-polluting coal-burning power plant. At least 19 other states are also competing for the electricity-generator. A task force that includes several Ohio government agencies and the Ohio Coal Association has picked eight Ohio counties as ideal for the power plant. Mark Shanahan heads the Ohio Air Quality Development Authority, which is heading up the campaign to bring the facility here. Shanahan says whichever state lands the giant power plant will benefit from several hundred temporary construction jobs…..plus between 50 and a hundred permanent jobs for people operating the facility. Even if Ohio lands the project, though, it won’t become a reality quickly. It could be years before the federal government decides where to build it….and, then it could take anywhere from 3 to 5 years to construct. Among the Ohio counties that are vying for the plant are -- Athens, Clermont, Hamilton, Meigs, Carroll, Stark, Tuscarawas, and Coshocton. |
