This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

| Crews work to free barges that smashed into an Ohio River dam during flooding. |

A work crew is back on the job at Belleville Locks and Dam on the Ohio River, trying to remove coal barges that crashed into the dam. The workers had some success yesterday, but Chuck Minsker of the U-S Army Corps of engineers says its slow going. Minsker says crews can only work to free the barges during daylight hours because it is too dangerous to be on the river at night, and he's unable to say when it will be done. The barges are blocking water control gates at Belleville, about 16 miles downstream from Parkersburg. With the gates open, water levels in a 42-mile section of the river are so low the river can't support barge traffic. The barges are among several that broke loose from a vessel on January sixth. |
