Order Online : "The State of Ohio"
This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

Secretary of State says voting machine selection deadline is firm.
By Karen Kasler - January 26, 2005
Secretary of State Ken Blackwell says he's not at all flexible on his deadline for county boards of elections to choose the machines voters will use in 2006. He says those boards must choose between machines from one of two vendors by February 9 - no later.
The incoming president of the Ohio Association of Elections Officials, who called that decision "somewhat dictatorial", says he's still hoping for some wiggle room. Keith Cunningham told Ohio Public Radio's Karen Kasler his county is ready, but not all are.

Blackwell praised poll workers and boards of elections members for their work in the presidential election at their annual conference in Columbus Wednesday/this week. But Blackwell says the February 9 deadline is the only way to ensure federal funding for machines that meet the state's voter verifiable paper audit trail requirement by 2006.
