Many Ohioans who buy items by mail order or over the internet are not obeying the tax law. And tax officials are having a hard time convincing them to. State law declares that if a company outside of Ohio doesn’t charge an Ohio customer sales tax, it’s up to the customer to pay the state later. There’s even a line on the Ohio income tax form for people to fess up and pay up, but only a small proportion of taxpayers are doing it. Still, Ohio Tax Commissioner Bill Wilkins is continuing to plead with people to pay what they owe. Wilkins' department reports that last year, only about 45-thousand taxpayers admitted they had purchased an un-taxed item and paid the sales tax they owed when they filed their income tax return. |
