Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman testified on Capital Hill Wednesday about his department's fiscal year 2006 budget request. It's a budget that Southern Ohio Congressman Ted Strickland says is "unacceptable" because it eliminates funding for cold standby operations at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant. Strickland is a Democrat who represents some of the workers at the Portsmouth plant in Pike County. He says the administration's no-funding decision violates promises made by then-candidate George Bush, who supported cold standby in the name of national security and energy independence. The Bush administration says the programs it's cutting or eliminating are inefficient, duplicate other efforts, or have just failed. |
