State logs its first human case of potentially deadly West Nile virus for 2005.
By Bill Cohen - July 8, 2005
Ohio is reporting its first probable human case of West Nile virus this year. A 26-year-old man from Darke County is the victim, but the local health department reports he has now recovered. Last year in Ohio, the number of cases of West Nile was down substantially. But state health officials say there’s no way to guarantee that the downward trend will continue this year. That’s because the illness is spread by mosquitoes and their numbers can zoom up or down very quickly. Statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen talked about the disease with a spokesman for the health department, Kristopher Weiss. Besides humans, the West Nile virus can strike birds and horses.
