Ohio asks for more green to battle destructive emerald ash borer.
By Jo Ingles - July 25, 2005
Ohio could be losing even more of its 3.8 billion ash trees this summer to an emerald ash borer infestation. In the past couple of weeks, diseased trees were found in central Ohio. Until that time, the problem was thought to be mainly confined to trees in northwest Ohio. Now Governor Bob Taft is asking the federal government to help deal with the ash borer infestation problem in Ohio. The Governor’s spokesman, Mark Rickel, says the worry is that if the state uses all of its federal allocation of money this year, there won’t be enough to eradicate future infestations next year. Governor Taft says eradicating this pest from Ohio is crucial because trees that are known to be infested with the disease need to be destroyed to prevent spread of the disease.
