More than 4,000 hamsters, mice, rats, gerbils, and guinea pigs have been handed a death sentence. They’re currently living at a private pet distribution center near Zanesville, but health officials say they must be killed because a handful of the animals have a virus that’s been blamed for killing three human transplant patients. Ohio agriculture officials quarantined the facility last week, and after one gerbil from the center was linked to the deaths, tests for the LCM virus began on a sample of the animals that remain. Now, those test results are in, and Lee Ann Mizer of the Agriculture Department says they are bad news. She says the 4,000 animals will probably be euthanized with carbon dioxide gas next week. |
