New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. Ohio’s biggest cities had been prepared for planeloads of evacuees from the hurricane-ravaged areas of Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama. Those planes never arrived, but the Red Cross and FEMA say thousands of people from those areas are in Ohio, and some are looking for help. Ohio Department of Public Safety Director Ken Morckel talked about that with Ohio Public Radio’s Karen Kasler. The Ohio Emergency Management Agency says the Red Cross and FEMA have a formula by which they estimates the number of evacuees, so there may be more or fewer than 7-thousand people displaced by Katrina temporarily transplanted in Ohio. The state will hand out 2-thousand dollars in state and federal funds to each evacuee family. |
