Food pantries and soup kitchens say their resources have been stretched very thin in recent years. And some responded in a national survey that they fear they may have to close their doors completely. Thirty-one thousand agencies nationwide were surveyed by America's Second Harvest. More than 70% of pantries and 65% of kitchens said they're afraid they may be on the brink of closing down. Lisa Hamlar-Fugitt is the executive director of the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Food Banks, and she says that includes faith-based organizations, which have been getting big state grants recently.
Though hunger agencies received an infusion of more than a million dollars in federal aid last month, advocates say they need $14 million to deal with emergency food demands. |
