Order Online : "The State of Ohio"
This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

Hunger agencies say they're starving for resources, and some fear they might close completely.
By Karen Kasler - June 8, 2006
Food pantries and soup kitchens say their resources have been stretched very thin in recent years. And some responded in a national survey that they fear they may have to close their doors completely. Thirty-one thousand agencies nationwide were surveyed by America's Second Harvest. More than 70% of pantries and 65% of kitchens said they're afraid they may be on the brink of closing down. Lisa Hamlar-Fugitt is the executive director of the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Food Banks, and she says that includes faith-based organizations, which have been getting big state grants recently.

Though hunger agencies received an infusion of more than a million dollars in federal aid last month, advocates say they need $14 million to deal with emergency food demands.
