This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. Ohio battles rabid raccoons with an air-to-ground offensive.
By Bill Cohen - August 30, 2006
In a few days, residents of fourteen northeastern Ohio counties will once again getting some special help battling raccoon rabies. Health officials will be dropping vaccine-laden bait in the region to try to immunize wild raccoons along the Pennsylvania and West Virginia border. Kathy Smith is Ohio’s Health Department veterinarian. She tells Ohio Public Radio’s Bill Cohen that two different types of bait are being used.

The anti-rabies vaccine is being dropped in Ashtabula, Belmont, Columbiana, Jefferson, Mahoning, Trumbull, Carroll, Harrison, Monroe, Cuyahoga, Portage Summit, Geauga and Lake Counties.
