Democrat Ted Strickland’s campaign for governor got a boost with a visit to Columbus from U.S. Senator Barack Obama. The popular Illinois Democrat echoed many of Strickland’s themes, including a call for Ohio to produce more ethanol from corn. Obama told a crowd of several hundred people that current U.S. dependence on foreign oil helps prop up anti-American regimes in the mideast.
Obama is the only African-American in the U.S. Senate. And the crowd he spoke to at the King Arts Complex in Columbus was predominantly black. Strickland supporters were hoping Obama’s appearance would send a message to the black community that even though Strickland is white and Republican candidate for governor Ken Blackwell is African-American, black voters should not make their decision based on race. |
