This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. Deer gun season is underway, with some 400,000 hunters expected to take aim at Ohio's deer population, estimated at 675,000. Lindsay Deering with the Ohio Division of Wildlife says this first round of the season runs through December 2, but then a second two-day round of hunting begins on December 15.
Though some might oppose the idea of hunting, Deering says it's necessary.
Deering says hunters are well-prepared before putting on their blaze orange - they have to take a 12-hour classroom course and pass a test before they are issued a hunting license. And Deering says hunters can start as early as they like.
Deering estimates as many as 200,000 deer will be harvested this year, by gun hunters as well as those using muzzleloaders and bows. The state says gun season brings $266 million into the Ohio economy. That includes everything from permits to meals and hotel rooms for hunters. |
