Order Online : "The State of Ohio"
This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

Legislator wants to expand law to give new moms more time to give up babies if they wish.
By Jo Ingles - February 15, 2008
Fifty-four newborn babies have been surrendered at hospitals and other places known as safe havens since a law went into effect in 2001. That law allows mothers to take their unwanted newborn child to a safe haven within 72 hours of the baby's birth, surrender him or her with no questions asked. Democratic Rep. Tim DeGeeter says the new law is working so well that he wants to expand it in two ways.

DeGeeter says his proposed changes would make Ohio's law more like ones used in other states where the program is even more successful.
Rep. Tim DeGeeter (D-Parma) (:31)
