This week on "The State of Ohio": The budget is on its way to a committee that will hammer out the differences before the end of the month deadline. But there are serious issues on both sides that could slow down the talks. A billion dollars is headed back to Ohio employers who paid into the states Bureau of Workers' Comp program. But a critic says the BWC has an outstanding bill that remains unpaid. And more on how Ohio's poorest people are surviving the rising costs of a basic existence.

US Sen. George Voinovich says the 45-year-old Brent Spence Bridge that carries I-75 across the Ohio River has become one big traffic jam and needs to be replaced as soon as possible. Voinovich met with leaders from Cincinnati, Hamilton County and Northern Kentucky today to talk about the bridge. He says because I-75 is the second most traveled interstate in the U-S, replacing the structure needs to be a priority.
Voinovich will be the ranking member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee when the next highway bill is considered and he'll have a key role in drafting it. He says area lawmakers, including himself, have earmarked more than $45 million so far toward replacing the Brent Spence. After the meeting, Voinovich told reporters that charging tolls on the new bridge was among a number of ideas for paying for it. But he says his feeling is it should not be a toll bridge since it's a national priority that should be shared in by the rest of America. |
