Watch This Week's "The State of Ohio" Online
Order Online : "The State of Ohio"
This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

Superintendent says this school year will be her last, and governor wants to appoint her successor.
By Bill Cohen - May 28, 2008
It's been expected for months, and today Ohio's top education leader made it official; she's quitting her job as State School Superintendent. Susan Zelman had begun looking for another job earlier this year, after Gov. Ted Strickland said he wanted the authority to appoint someone who would have power over Zelman at the State Department of Education. State legislators never gave Strickland that authority, but Zelman now says she's leaving her post anyway. She talked about her departure with statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen.

Zelman's replacement will be chosen by the state board of education. Eleven board members are elected by Ohio voters. Eight other members are appointed by the governor.
