| Food banks hungry for help after mass recall from salmonella outbreak. |

The salmonella outbreak linked to peanuts has been devastating for Ohio's food banks. Thousands of pounds of food has been thrown out, and Lisa Hamlar-Fugitt at the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Food Banks describes it as "catastrophic".
And Hamlar-Fugitt says with the state's economic situation and three rounds of budget cuts last year, this outbreak couldn't come at a worse time.
Hamlar-Fugitt says it's impossible to put a dollar figure on the cost of the outbreak right now, but says that buying replacement food might cost millions. The outbreak has led to one of largest recalls in history with more than 1,800 products pulled. Health officials say two Ohio deaths have been linked to the outbreak. |
