Shawnee State Forest is named after the Shawnee Indians who once lived there. It's located to the west of Portsmouth and is sometimes referred to as "The Little Smokies of Ohio." At 63,000 acres, Shawnee State Forest is the largest of Ohio's state forests and includes an 8,000-acre wilderness area. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources recently finished an update of the management plan for the wilderness area. WOUB's Fred Kight has the story.
