Health experts aiming at northeast and eastern Ohio to try to rid them of rabid racoons.
By Jo Ingles - September 2, 2009
Health and wildlife control officials are taking action this weekend that they believe will help to prevent rabies in raccoons. The federal and state groups will be targeting 16 northeast and eastern Ohio counties where rabid raccoons have been a problem. In an interview with Ohio Public Radio's Jo Ingles, Kristopher Weiss of the Ohio Department of Health explains the annual raccoon rabies vaccination operations program.

Weiss says the vaccine program has proven successful over the past decade. More than 13 million baits have been distributed in Ohio voter since 1997 when the program began. The Ohio Department of Health says one skunk from Lake county tested positive for rabies this year. That's down significantly from 2008 when nine rabid animals from Lake and Trumbull counties tested positive for the disease. The seven state efforts should be complete in Ohio by the end of this month.
