International Study: Ohio #2 Producer of Toxic Chemicals in North America.
By Bill Cohen - April 17, 2003
For years, it’s been clear that Ohio produces a lot of dangerous chemical waste, and some of it winds up in the air and water. Now, there’s even more evidence…and it’s coming from an international environmental agency. The Commission for Environmental Cooperation was set up by the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, in the wake of the NAFTA trade agreement. The commission’s director, Victor Shantora, tells Ohio Public Radio’s Bill Cohen, Ohio and just a handful of other states produce the largest chunk of hazardous waste.
Bill Cohen reports (3:14)
That is Victor Shantora, head of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation. His agency’s latest environmental study shows that, a few years ago, Ohio and other states sent a lot of pollution and waste northward to Canada, but now, that trend has been reversed. Canada is now a net exporter of toxic chemicals.
