| Governor Bob Taft Defends His School Funding Plan. |

Governor Bob Taft is defending his latest school funding plan against criticism from Ohio school leaders. They say it doesn't do enough to help boost education, but he says it's a big step forward and it's the most state government can afford during this cooling-off period in the economy.
Currently, Ohio spends a minimum of about $4,300 per student each year. Taft's plan would boost that spending floor to nearly $5,500 in five years.
In an interview with statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen, Taft says that should be enough to satisfy the Ohio Supreme Court. |

Twice over the past 4 years, the Ohio Supreme Court has ordered legislators and the governor to totally revamp the way the state pays for schools.
Taft insists that because his proposal includes more money for improvements like all-day Kindergarten and better testing of students, it amounts to that big change the court is demanding. |
