Welfare Study: Earn More with Job; Stay Off with Benefits.
By Jo Ingles - July 23, 2001
Ohio's welfare rolls are at the lowest level they've been during the past thirty four years. Ohio Department of Job and Family Services officials say that's good news because it means the state's welfare to work program is successful. The agency says a new study shows that's not the only good news. It reports people who are getting off welfare are making more money than when they relied on the system. In an interview with statehouse correspondent Jo Ingles, welfare policy administrator Joel Potts explains who the average welfare recipient is these days.
Jo Ingles reports (2:17)
Welfare official Joel Potts says people who go into jobs that provide benefits, health care, or paid leave are least likely to return to the rolls. The study also found the availability of child care is not a major obstacle for most of the families going off welfare. Potts attributes that to the focus his agency has put on making sure affordable quality child care is available.
