This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

The U-S Environmental Protection Agency has awarded its largest grant ever to study the connection between air pollution and cardiovascular disease. The University of Washington has been given 30 million dollars to track people from varied ethnic groups who live in cities across the country. Researchers will be evaluating whether long term exposure to fine particles is associated with the buildup of plaque in arteries. The Ohio Environmental Council has been urging the government to do more on this issue. But in an interview with Ohio Public Radio’s Jo Ingles, council spokesman Jack Shaner questions the need for this new study. Shaner says he hopes Ohioans will be included in the new study. One of Ohio’s major electric companies refers Ohio Public Radio to an Emory University study that has already identified a link between carbon monoxide and carbon containing particles and cardiovascular diseases. It shows the pollution from cars has a direct effect on respiratory health. |
