This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

Over the next eight years, Ohio’s female prison population is expected to grow at twice the rate of the male prison population….and that is prompting corrections officials to set up a fourth lock-up, just for women. The growth rate for female inmates is forecast at 28 per cent….and the growth rate for male prisoners is forecast at 13 per cent. Corrections Director Reggie Wilkinson talks about the situation with statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen.
Ohio isn’t alone in seeing a noticeable growth in its female prison population. Many other states are seeing big increases in the number of female prisoners….while the number of male inmates is increasing at a much smaller rate….or actually going down. |
