A state senator was nearly thrown out of the Ohio Senate chamber this afternoon, as debate erupted between minority Democrats and majority Republicans over a new 51-billion dollar state budget. Sen. Robert Hagan (D-Youngstown) was upset that the spending package cut state money for cities, especially his home town. When Republican John Carey (R-Wellston) pointed out that the proposal restored at least a small bit of the cutback that the Ohio House had enacted, Hagan shot back, and then kept talking, though Senate President Bill Harris told him to quit. Instead of ordering Hagan out of the chamber, Harris recessed the session for several hours. This disagreement on the senate floor was the most bitter of any in recent memory, and it symbolized how far apart the Democrats and Republicans are over basic money issues. |
