This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

A beetle that’s killing thousands of ash trees in Ohio has been discovered in four more locations in the northwest corner of the state. But agriculture officials say it’s nothing to get alarmed about. The new outbreaks of the emerald ash borer are in Lucas County and Wood County, which already have infestations, so the new discoveries don’t mean there’s been a major spread of the killer bugs. Agriculture officials say they plan to continue doing what they’ve been doing to contain the borer - killing all ash trees within a half-mile of the infected trees. Melissa Brewer speaks for the agriculture department…and she talked with Ohio Public Radio’s Bill Cohen about how that process is going. So far, the emerald ash borer has been spotted in 5 Northwestern counties: Defiance, Fulton, Henry, Lucas, and Wood, plus in Franklin County in Central Ohio. |
