Calls to QuitLine up in wake of celebrity lung cancer announcements.
By Karen Kasler - August 11, 2005
Calls to the state-run phone bank set up to help Ohioans quit smoking are up dramatically this week, following the death of ABC News anchor Peter Jennings from lung cancer. Also this week, the announcement was made that Dana Reeve, the widow of actor and spinal injury activist Christopher Reeve, has lung cancer. Wendy Simpkins with the American Cancer Society Ohio Division helps promote the toll-free QuitLine (800-QUIT-NOW). She told Ohio Public Radio's Karen Kasler that people seem to be reacting to the news. Simpkins says the increase in calls to the QuitLine comes a week after the agency that runs it announced budget cuts of 11 percent, after millions in funds the agency expected were diverted to other state programs, including paying for auto emissions testing in Northeast Ohio. The American Cancer Society says lung cancer is the number one killer in Ohio and in the nation. Last year, more than 24-thousand Ohioans died of lung cancer.
