Order Online : "The State of Ohio"
This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

Fight for endorsement in Supreme Court race could be about diversity.
By Jo Ingles - February 21, 2006
A former Democratic state lawmaker is set to be endorsed tomorrow by leaders of the Ohio Democratic Party for a key Supreme Court race, the seat being vacated by the Court's only Democrat, Alice Robie Resnick. Former state senator Ben Espy, an influencial African American attorney, believes he will be endorsed by party leaders themselves but not because of his background or the color of his skin.

But another Democrat who’d like to replace Resnick says it’s hard to tell what Espy’s political philosophy really is since he’s never been a judge before. Cuyahoga County juvenile judge Peter Sikora says he thinks diversity on the ticket could be the reason why Espy is likely to get the endorsement from the party.

Ben Espy was endorsed by a Democratic screening committee over the weekend. Sikora says he’s disappointed that his visits with Democratic leaders around the state didn't play more of a role in the committee's vote.
