A medical expert who testified for the defense in Columbus' sniper trial said Charles McCoy Junior is too mentally ill to understand what he did. Dr. Mark Mills examined McCoy last summer and tested him in jail. Dr. Mark Mills told McCoy's lawyer that he thinks, toward the end of the five month shooting spree, that McCoy didn't consider the possibility that he'd be caught. Under questioning from Franklin County prosecutor Ron O'Brien, Mills said he thinks McCoy's schizophrenia was the driving force behind the shootings. McCoy could face the death penalty if convicted of the 12 shootings, including the one that killed passenger 62-year-old Gail Knisley in a car in November 2003. The trial is being broadcast live on Court TV. |
